Writing and Editing
In this workshop, participants will learn a proven framework for writing. They’ll learn to approach their audience and message strategically and edit more efficiently for clarity, tone, and accuracy. Participants will start improving their work right away; they’ll bring their own writing to the workshop and apply edits in real time.
Inside the Workshop
1st half
The “ART” of Audience Awareness • Plan for your document’s target Audience, Result, and Tone.
Information Design • Only in our signature workshops: learn how to design your writing to keep readers engaged.
2nd half
Sentences that tell stories • A little bit of grammar, but only the essentials; where to focus editing attention; how to assess readability and make meaning clear.
Testing, editing, and proofreading• Everyone’s favorite part: the best tools for editing and proofreading, and when and how to use them.
The workshop is highly interactive. With Zoom as our preferred platform, we use polling, chat, discussion, breakout rooms, and application to keep participants engaged and on their toes. Participants bring a piece of their own writing and work on it during the workshop.
After the workshop, participants will be able to:
Apply the ART tool for audience awareness to any writing task or genre
Consider usability and formatting first when editing drafts
Grab and hold the attention of busy, distracted readers
Focus their edits for clarity, brevity, and word choice at the sentence level
Use tools for style, grammar, and proofreading

“Bold Type facilitated their Writing and Editing training for 30 of our staff members. Both Casey and Grace were incredibly easy to work with, and they intentionally catered the workshop to our needs. Several months later and our staff is still actively using the strategies learned in their daily communication to our partners and program participants.”
